The Citadel - Place
Information: The Citadel
The Citadel (In Danish: Kastellet). King Christian IV initiated Kastellets construction in 1626 with the building of an advanced post St. Anne's Redoubt. After the Swedish siege of Copenhagen (1658–1660) the Dutch engineer Henrik Rüse was called in to help rebuild and extend the construction. The Citadel is one of the best preserved fortresses in Northern Europe. It is constructed in the form of a pentagon with bastions at its corners. Today the area houses various military activities but it mainly serves as a public park and a historic site.
